About
Here on the Oudeschans, in the eastern part of Amsterdam’s inner city, the idea behind Coco Caramel took shape.
Montelbaanstoren, Amsterdam
Built in 1516 as a defense tower on the Oudeschans, the Montelbaanstoren has watched over the canals for more than 500 years. Locals once called it 𝑀𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒 𝐽𝑎𝑎𝑝, but the true story lies in its name. The Duke of Alba, the Spanish ruler of the Netherlands in the 16th century, planned to build a fortress here named 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒 𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑜. The castle was never built, but the name remained and gradually transformed into 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑏𝑎𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑛.
This tower also inspired Claude Monet, who captured it in his painting 𝑉𝑢𝑒 𝑑𝑒 𝑙𝑎 𝑡𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑏𝑎𝑛, 𝐴𝑚𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑑𝑎𝑚.
That is why the first collection carries this story in its name:
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑛 𝑆𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝐼: 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑒 𝐴𝑙𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑜
A limited series, individually numbered and titled 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑓𝑒𝑙 𝐴𝑟𝑡𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘.
